Spoken Weird, which Walsh founded in 2013, is a monthly poetry/spoken word night in Halifax, West Yorkshire. We're currently Halifax's longest-running, loudest and most eclectic poetry night, and take pride in being a night where you never have to apologise for words that others may consider weird. Walsh hosts the event alongside talented co-host John Darwin, former Write Out Loud Sale host and A Firm of Poets core member. We’re happily situated at CAMRA winning venue Victorian Craft Beer Café.
In January 2019, Spoken Weird expanded upon its regular monthly night to include Spoken Queered, a poetry event for LGBT+ writer/performers, at Halifax's Village LGBT Bar. Walsh hosted the first two events and was joined by co-host Drew Lawson as of March 31st. It is currently Halifax's only regular LGBTQ poetry event.
May 2019 will see Spoken Weird branch out into slam poetry, holding their slam Weird of Mouth at the Guardian-recommended The Grayston Unity on the penultimate Thursday of every month, starting May 23rd.
As it’s been since our early days in a tiny room at The Sportsman, Spoken Weird and Spoken Queered are events where emerging writer/performers can share a stage with award winners, poet laureates, slam stars, rap battle champions and legends.
